Compaq Armada M300 Drivers For Mac
I can't get an external USB hard drive to work with a FC4 laptop using a USB Cardbus PC card. The drive works fine on a different FC4 laptop so I'm assuming it's an issue with the PC card. I have a Compaq Armada M300 laptop (PII 333, 256 MB RAM) that I've installed FC4 on. The built-in USB port is only a 1.1, so I got a generic Cardbus PC card with two USB 2.0 ports on it. I had the card inserted in the laptop with a USB hard disk attached during the install of FC4, and I expected the hard drive to be automatically found and mounted under /media/usbdisk (which is what it did on my less-old Dell 2650). But, nothing. The USB PC Card is detected, and the drive gets power from the card.
Under the hardware browser's USB section, it sees. Code: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 USB (manufacturer unknown, driver uhci-hcd) NEC Corporation USB (manufacturer unknown, driver ohci-hcd) NEC Corporation USB (manufacturer unknown, driver ohci-hcd) NEC Corporation USB 2.0 (manufacturer unknown, driver ehci-hcd) FC4 didn't make /dev/sda. so I created them as root with 'mknod /dev/sda b 8 0' and 'mknod /dev/sda1 b 8 1' etc. But 'fdisk -l /dev/sda' returns nothing. The USB 2.0 card is a 'Model XWT-745' Cardbus 32-bit pc card with two USB 2.0 ports. Searching Google for 'XWT-745' returns nothing so I figure this is some totally generic no-name item. It's responsible for the three NEC Corporation entries in the hardware browser though; at least, when I yank it out, only the Intel entry remains.
Any suggestions? The only other drive in the system is a IDE at /dev/hda, so I assumed that the USB drive would be /dev/sda.

Peace, So just got hold of an old Compaq Armada M300 (P3 500Mhz 64MB - but upgrading to 256MB). No CD, floppy, and doesn't boot off USB, currently running a halfway hosed Win98.
I was able to get the flashdrive running in Win98 though. I want to install Linux on it. Suggestions on how to do so (w/o CD, USB, or floppy)? Some ideas I have had: - arent there some tools that allow you 'shrink' a windows partition? Could I do so and install Linux into the separate partition? - I think I've done this before - take out the laptop hardrive.
Connect it to a desktop, wipe it clean, and copy OS files + some boot files on to HD, and then put it back in. Is this still possible?

- The BIOS allows a network boot, but I dont have a server. Any possible way to quickly and easily setup such a server on my desktop just for this purpose? Is it possible to install from remote servers? - any other suggestions? Suggestions for Distro to use? I am newbie to Linux, but based on some research thinking of (in order) Slackware, Ubuntu or Xubuntu, DSL, Puppy, and maybe Vector, Arch, Xandros.

(remember: Experienced in windows. But Linux newbie.) Apologies for the multiple questions. Hi it is probably worth noting that some of the m300s only support 800x600 regardless of OS. Had good experiences with xandros 3 on one of these a few years ago and justloaded antix 7 on another one but have not played around enough with it yet. Kept a small 98 partition on both. But am thinking it is way past time to just let go of 98.
Had the luxury of a base with the floppy and a combo cdr/dvd drive for installation - so can't offer any useful insights into your original query. Biggest issue with these lately is proper detection, utilization and charging of the batteries - have two machines where known good batteries are rarely detected and require ac to boot.
